★ How to Store Tea in a Cold Storage

Tea is a delicate product extremely sensitive to temperature, humidity, light, and odors. Many tea merchants face this common problem: high-quality premium tea, purchased at significant cost, loses its aroma, flavor, and freshness after just a few months of storage—sometimes even developing a stale taste. The issue often lies in the storage environment.

The correct method for refrigerated tea storage is to maintain the storage temperature below 5°C. Based on storage duration, we recommend:

Short-Term Storage (within 6 months): Use a fresh-keeping cold storage at 0°C to 5°C. This is a cost-effective solution suitable for most tea storage needs.

Long-Term Storage (exceeding 6 months): Recommend a freezing environment between -10°C and -18°C to more effectively delay the oxidative deterioration of tea components.

 

Key Considerations:

Tea must be stored in a dedicated cold storage. If mixing with other foods is unavoidable, ensure tea is in sealed packaging. Tea is highly absorbent and easily picks up odors.

Proper air circulation inside the cold storage is essential to maintain uniform temperature.

When purchasing tea in bulk, divide it into small packages or containers before storing. Take only the required amount for use each time; avoid repeatedly freezing and thawing the same batch.

When removing tea from cold storage, allow the container to gradually return to room temperature before opening. If opened too quickly, condensation may form on the container, increasing the moisture content of the tea and accelerating its deterioration.

 

★ 4 Key Factors for High-Quality Tea Storage

1. Tea Moisture Content
Moisture acts as a medium for chemical reactions in tea. The higher the moisture content, the faster tea ages, resulting in yellowing color and reduced freshness.

Ideal Range: 3%–5% (for green teas, etc.)

Critical Threshold: Above 7%, even the best preservation techniques cannot maintain quality.

Dangerous Level: Above 8.8%, the tea is highly susceptible to mold.

 

2. Storage Temperature
For every 10°C increase in temperature, the rate of chemical reactions doubles. Low temperature is the most effective way to delay tea deterioration.

Premium Green Tea: 0°C to 5°C

Oolong Teas (e.g., Tieguanyin): Approximately -15°C to maintain color and aroma over long periods.

 

3. Light
Light exposure causes photo-oxidation of chlorophyll, leading to fading and yellowing of green tea. It also triggers aromatic compounds to degrade, creating undesirable "sun-dried" odors. Light-proof storage is essential.

 

4. Air Humidity
Tea naturally absorbs moisture. When ambient humidity exceeds 80%, tea moisture content can rise above 10% within a single day.

Recommended Relative Humidity: 30%–50%

Packaging materials should have low moisture permeability to block external humidity.
